The Blue Vase

I enjoyed painting those petunias so much at the beach. I had to paint something light and airy again. Even though I had petunias I decided to try my Anna's hydrangea flowers which are open balls of small whitish flowers. They have a lovely greenish cast to them. A bit difficult to get that gorgeous color. I love flowers so much, I hope I don't bore you this summer.

Sunflowers

I had so much fun painting these Sunflowers. I was
feeling very 'beachy' down at my sisters small cottage in Florence Oregon. It was sunny and balmy. The afternoon light was beautiful on the sunflowers. I painted quickly to get the light perfectly hitting the flowers as evening drew near. I new I would have plenty to do on the painting in the next few days to refine or fix any errors, but the initial painting with the fresh colors and striking light was the most important thing to show the golden rays.

White Petunias

These few small white Petunias were almost lost in the garden. One more day and they would have been gone, shriveled by the sun. I had to rescue their presence and give them a place in my home. A place of permanence on my canvas. The cool blues tempered the heat of summer.

Morning Calm

My friend and I went up to paint with Plein Air Washington Artists on Whidbey Island this last week. What a gorgeous day. The sky was filled with lots of atmosphere; warm, sultry and sunny. The light was beautiful on the farmland. The air was still and the fields were ribbons of soft colors. The colors were so exciting, but I knew I had to mix colors carefully so that each field would relate to all the other fields and passages.

THE LAST DAY OF SUMMER

Sylvia, An Artist's Journal

I wanted to paint outside in the garden all summer long. One thing came up after another, and before I knew it summer was looking to be over. The days were obviously shorter, weather cooling and storms were coming in. Today was the last warm sunny day when my flowers would still be standing up blooming. I had to get out now and paint at least one good Plein Air Garden painting! I set up quickly and tried to capture the dancing of the Rudbeckia blossoms on the tops of their tall wiry stems.

An Artist's Journal by Sylvia - The Beginning......

Though I am an artist I am also a gardner, wife, mom, friend, sister, businesser, volunteer and dog master to Tater. Life is busy, complex, and it often pulls me away from my artistic profession as an artist. To keep on tract I am embarking on a painting exercise Sherry Grover, a marketing expert, told me years ago to do i.e. - Paint 100 "ME Paintings", paintings I don’t ‘have’ to paint but I want to paint for ‘Me’. This is to become partially a self-discovery, a style discovery and a way to develop a new seriousness and good habits for me about my art. So I had better get started.

This Bog will be a witness of this process. The outcome is unknown but I do know I will get to paint a lot. I am sure I will be painting well beyond 100 ‘me paintings’. It is a “Good Thing”, Sylvia.  (:
